How does a chick from small town Saskatchewan get involved in racing? All I gotta say is THANX DAD!
When I was 6(ish) years old I learned how to ride a little red and white YZR-50 my dad bought. Technically he purchased it for himself, but his little girl had more "seat time" than he ever did.
"Pull in the clutch, push down one, give it a little gas, and let the clutch out!" A few stalls, and many wheelies later I came back into the yard slowing down near dad.
"Dad, does this go any faster?" Dad giggles, and says, "Well all you gotta do is pull in the clutch again, pull up on the shifter and let the clutch out again!"
Off I went for around 2 minutes before I came back.... "How many times can I pull up...?"
That is the beginning of the end. The little YZR went though hell, but thankfully I got all the BIG mistakes out on that little bike. The plastics tell the story!
I learned how to ride the "big bikes" at the track at Race City, in Calgary, AB. Yearly from the age of 15-18 my dad and I would attend the FAST racing school out of Shannonville for 2 days of fast and furious FUN!! I was HOOKED!!
Riding through the summer I was lucky enough meet Mike Zottmann #1, a pro racer with the CMRA. I'm sure he thought I was kidding when I told him I wanted to race! The joke at the beginning of our relationship was that you couldn't have 2 racers in the house. Thankfully he kept me around until next season, humored me by bringing me to the track, and we are still going strong! |
